Baconsthorpe Castle lies to the south-east of Holt in north Norfolk (English Heritage website). It was placed in State Guardianship in 1940. The guidebook was prepared by Stuart E. Rigold in 1966 (and was in its 7th impression in 1981). Rigold also wrote guides for North Elmham and Thetford Priory, both in Norfolk. The guide is divided into the two standard sections of History and Description with a fold out paper plan inside the back cover.

An audio guide is now available from the English Heritage website.
